Bo Burnham: Inside [2021]
"If you wake up in a house that's full of smoke, don't panic. Call me and I'll tell you a joke."
The silence, the sound, the anger, the sorrow, the laughter, the tears. This is a very strange thing for me to have watched, and a very difficult thing to review. How do you put a number on the culmination of an entire year's worth of disasters and impending dooms all smashed together into one magical musical production generated by one man and some colorful lights? How do you sum that up?
I'd argue that, if we hadn't all lived it together, you simply couldn't.
There aren't words that I can choose to accurately describe the way this special made me feel or the importance that I truly think it holds. Inside offers us a look back at the events we all experienced in 2020 through the lens of quirky musical comedy and darkly sardonic humor. The production value in this set is astounding to say the least, and groundbreaking to say something cliché. I think that because of the type of content it is, it will be mostly ignored by larger awards shows, but it deserves every accolade they have to offer.
Wonderfully written, catchy songs that all hold much deeper and horrifically reflective meanings than their fun beats, beautiful camera work, and meaningful insights into our society and the way one man handled his own loneliness through this time; Inside is something to see to believe.
Don't miss this one.
"Does anybody want to joke, when no one's laughing in the background?"
