April 9 - April 16
Scream 6, Willow, Apollo 10 1/2, The House of the Devil, Suzume, Belle
-Scream 6 [2023]- 40
Easily the worst of the Scream films. Had I watched this at home or gone alone, I would have given up well before the credits rolled. A really miserable experience.
-Willow [1988]- 78
I put off watching this for many, many years because I thought it simply garnered nostalgia hype. Boy was I wrong. While it's certainly completely out of control, it's certainly a ton of fun as well.
-Apollo 10 1/2 [2022]- No rating
If you have a nostalgia for the 60's/70's this is a helluva timebomb and features some interesting animation. If you don't have that nostalgia... It's dreadfully boring and I didn't make it through the entire thing.
-The House of the Devil [2009]- 82
Speaking of the 60's and 70's... This is a 2009 horror by Ti West [of recent X and Pearl fame] that emulates horror of those two decades. If you're a fan of things like Rosemary's Baby this one is going to really hit home for you. Thoroughly enjoyed my time with this.
-Suzume [2023]- 65
A mostly cliché anime movie about an ancient god trying to destroy the world. Parts are funny, parts are spectacularly animated, parts are super cringe, and parts are downright sleep-inducing. If anime is something you love, you'll probably like this. As an umbrella experience, I think anime is just alright, and this particular anime was exactly "just alright" by the end of it.
-Belle [2021]- 73
Belle, on the other hand, is an anime movie I mostly really enjoyed. Beautifully animated, a fun take on a classic story, some surprisingly excellent and not "anime" music. The story concludes in a kind of awkward "why are the adults letting this child do that" way, but is mostly pretty great and very fun.
