After Midnight [2019]
This is another film by Gardner and Stella [who did The Battery, which I reviewed earlier this week (and loved)]. After Midnight really isn't any good and the problem is that the story is taken entirely too literally with (literally) no payoff at the end. With some simple changes to the story to make it more weird or simply more metaphorical, this could have been a very strong film from the budding director/writer combo.
The uncharacteristically bland story aside, it's very proficient on a technical level and I look forward to more of their work simply from that standpoint alone. Very strong camerawork, believable and fun performances, a script that could have used some editing for pacing issues but was otherwise acceptable.
After Midnight is a disappointing follow-up as a piece of cinema, but is still an impressive display of growth and prowess on the more technical levels.
